    Never used a proper camera?

    Three dials.
    That's it.

A camera is a bucket you fill with light. Too little light and the photo is black. Too much and it is white. These three dials are the only ways to change how much gets in — and each one costs you something else.

    DIAL 1

    Aperture — f/2, f/8, f/16

How wide the lens opens. Confusingly, a smaller number means a wider opening, so f/2 lets in far more light than f/16.

    SMALL NUMBER · f/2

Bright. Background goes soft and blurry behind your subject.

    BIG NUMBER · f/16

Dark. Everything front to back stays sharp.

    DIAL 2

    Shutter — 1/1000, 1/60, 1"

How long the camera stares. 1/1000 is a blink; 1 second is a long look. This is the one that decides whether a moving subject is frozen or smeared.

    FAST · 1/1000

Freezes anything. But barely any light gets in.

    SLOW · 1/15

Lots of light. Anything moving turns to streaks.

    DIAL 3

    ISO — 100, 800, 6400

How hard the camera strains to see. Raising it brightens a dark scene without touching the other two dials, but it adds grain — that speckly noise in night photos.

    LOW · 100

Clean, smooth image. Needs plenty of light.

    HIGH · 6400

Works in the dark. Looks grainy.

    THE ONLY RULE

Turn one, fix it with another

Every dial trades light for something else. Speed up the shutter to freeze a cyclist and the photo goes dark — so open the aperture or raise ISO to put that light back. That push and pull is the whole game.

IF YOU ONLY REMEMBER ONE THING

Keep the needle in the middle. The bar under the viewfinder is your light meter. Green in the centre means the brightness is right. Everything else is style.
